Scot Men's Tennis Sweeps Past Oberlin 7-0

The College of Wooster men's tennis team easily swept past Oberlin today (April 12) in the Scots' first North Coast Athletic Conference East Division match of the season. Wooster, which improved to 7-8 overall on the season, won every singles match in straight-sets and earned the doubles point to register its first shutout of the year.

Scot sophomore Jake Sintich earned a rare-shutout at number-one singles, blanking Mike Shelton 6-0, 6-0. Second singles saw junior Rob Ogg defeat Jon Stinson 6-2, 6-3, while classmate Matt Bierlein topped Ben Fox 6-4, 6-3 at number-three.

In fourth singles, sophomore Jim Sayed won easily 6-1, 6-1 over Brendan Mislin. Rounding out the singles' results, freshman Clint Bailey posted a 7-5, 6-0 decision over Rich Raz at number-five, while classmate Brandon Lichtman won 6-2, 6-2 against the Yeomen's Chris Criscione.

Sintich and Lichtman teamed up to garner an 8-4 victory over Stinson and Fox at first doubles. Scot sophomore Paul Wiley returned from injury to play his first match in a month, as he combined with Ogg to down Shelton and Mislin 8-1 at number-two. Bierlein and junior Kirk Lapham completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Criscione and Ashvin Raj in the third doubles spot.

"This was one of our better matches of the season because Oberlin had just beaten Wabash, which defeated us in February," commented Wooster's veteran head coach Hayden Schilling after the match. "Sintich, Ogg, and Bierlein had particularly strong singles matches, but I was especially pleased with our balance that we showed in not losing a set all day."

The Scots will look to continue their high-quality play tomorrow when they host Ohio Northern in non-conference action, starting at 3:30 p.m.
