Scot Men's Tennis Defeats Ohio Wesleyan


The College of Wooster men's tennis team won its third match in its last four tries today (April 6), beating Ohio Wesleyan 5-2 in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest at Delaware, Ohio. The Scots, who are now 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC, won in straight-sets at every position except for first and fourth singles.

Wooster sophomore Jake Sintich fell at the top spot by scores of 6-0, 6-4 to the Battling Bishops' Craig Pearson. Juniors Rob Ogg and Matt Bierlein were able to register similar-scoring wins at second and third singles, respectively. Ogg defeated Will Claypool 6-2, 7-6 (7-0), while Bierlein topped Nauman Gilani 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

The bottom half of the singles order began with Scot sophomore Jim Sayed slipping 7-5, 6-4 to Billy Coale at number-four. However, Clint Bailey and Brandon Lichtman, both of whom are Scot freshmen, won easily at fifth and sixth singles. Baily downed Matt Kane 6-0 and 6-3 in the fifth spot, while Lichtman eased past Donald Chambers at number-six by scores of 6-2, 7-5.

Wooster swept the doubles point, starting with Ogg and Sintich's 8-1 victory against Claypool and Pearson. Lichtman and Sayed teamed to beat Coale and Gilani 8-3 at number-two, while Bierlein and junior Kirk Lapham posted an 8-2 win over Kane and Aaron Violand at third doubles.

Next up for the Scots is the Great Lakes Collegiate Association Championships, which will be hosted by DePauw in Greencastle, Ind., this weekend (April 7-8).
