Wooster Splits A Pair of Matches
The College of Wooster men's tennis team split a pair of matches
this past weekend (March 31 and April 1), defeating Walsh 7-2 on the road
in a non-conference battle on Friday and losing to league opponent
Wittenberg 5-2 in Springfield, Ohio, on Saturday.
Injuries continue to be a problem for the Scots, as junior Nikhil
Padival was lost for the season earlier in the week after tearing his
Achilles tendon. In addition, sophomore Paul Wiley is unavailable to
compete, as he continues to rehab a sore shoulder.
Despite those injuries, Wooster topped Walsh with singles victories
coming from sophomore Jake Sintich, junior Rob Ogg, sophomore Jim Sayed,
and freshman Brandon Lichtman. Sintich won 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at number-one, Ogg
posted 7-5, 6-3 win at second singles, Sayed was victorious in the fifth
spot with scores of 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, and Lichtman prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at
number-six.
With the Scots leading 4-2 after singles play, they needed just one
win at doubles to claim the nine-point match. Wooster ended up sweeping the
doubles with Lichtman and Sayed winning by default at number-one, juniors
Matt Bierlein and Kirk Lapham triumphing 8-4 at number-two, and freshman
Clint Bailey and Sintich earning an 8-4 victory at number-three.
"I was pleased that we were able to beat a strong Walsh squad with
a patched up line-up," said Scot veteran head coach Hayden Schilling. "The
Walsh match was the best tennis we have played as a team in some time."
Wooster had its troubles against the Tigers, losing all but one
singles match, however, the Scots did win the doubles point. In the most
competitive match of the day, Sayed won a pair of tiebreakers in a
three-set dual at fourth singles.
In doubles, Sintich and Ogg demonstrated they are one of toughest
teams in the conference to beat, as they won 8-6 at the top spot. Bierlein
and Lapham also won 8-6 at third doubles, while Lichtman and Sayed fell 8-2
at number-two.
