Men Netters Lose Second-Straight 4-3 Match
The College of Wooster men's tennis team lost its second close
match in a row, as Washington and Lee sneaked by the Scots 4-3 in a contest
that featured straight-set victories at every position.
Washington and Lee's Rhys James cruised past junior Rob Ogg, who
was making his first-ever appearance at the number-one singles position, by
the score of 6-0, 6-2. Wooster sophomore Jake Sintich won 6-2, 6-2 over
Chris Sorenson at number-two and classmate Paul Wiley was victorious at
third singles, beating Rob Moynihan 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
However, Washington and Lee showed its depth, as the Generals swept
the four, five, and six singles positions. Chase Bice defeated junior Matt
Bierlein 6-4, 6-1 at number-four, Zach Vunacannon won 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) over
junior Nikhil Padivac, at the fifth spot, and Bobby Reitinger claimed a
6-2, 6-1 victory over freshman Clint Bailey.
Wooster won the top two doubles spots to earn the doubles point
with Ogg and Wiley teaming up to edge Bice and James 9-7 at the number-one
spot and freshman Brandon Lichtman and Sintich stopping John Jensen and
Vuncannon 8-5 at second doubles. Washington and Lee's Moynihan and
Sorenson defeated Bierlein and sophomore Jim Sayed 8-6 at number-three.
