The College of Wooster finished fourth at the Great Lakes Colleges
Association Tournament, which was played in Crawfordsville, Ind., this past
weekend (April 6-7), defeating Hope College in the first round and then
losing to a pair of national powers - Kalamazoo College and DePauw
University.
Wooster won the doubles point and then split its singles matches to
defeat Hope 4-3 and advance into the semifinals. Later Friday night,
playing indoors against the No. 8-ranked team in the country, Wooster fell
6-1 to Kalamazoo with the Scots' point coming from junior Jake Sintich at
No. 2 singles.
On Saturday, the third-place match went to No. 10-ranked DePauw, as
the Tigers took the doubles point and claimed four of the singles matches.
For the weekend, Sintich and senior Paul Wiley were the lone
doublewinners in singles for Wooster. Sintich also won his Hope match at
No. 2 singles 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 and prevailed 6-4, 6-3 over his Kalamazoo
opponent, while Wiley won 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 against Hope and 6-0, 4-6, 6-3
against DePauw, both coming at No. 4 singles.
At the top singles flight, freshman Nilesh Saldanha played well
despite going 0-3, as he took two of his three opponents to three sets.
Third singles saw senior Rob Ogg go 1-2 with his victory coming
against Hope (6-2, 7-6 (7-3)), while classmate Matt Bierlein came up with a
1-2 mark at No. 5 singles after defeating his opponent in the DePauw match
7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-3.
The Scots struggled at the bottom of the lineup, where they used
two different players, but went 0-3 at No. 6 singles.
In doubles, Ogg and Sintich went 1-2 at No. 1, highlighted by a
decisive 9-8 (7-5) win over Hope to give Wooster the match. Bierlein and
senior Kirk Lapham compiled a 1-2 mark at second doubles, as they defeated
their DePauw opponents 8-2, while sophomore Clint Bailey and Saldanha also
went 1-2 at No. 3 with their win being an 8-3 decision over Hope.
The Scots, who now own a 5-7 overall record, return to North Coast
Athletic Conference play this week with a pair of divisional match-ups on
Wednesday (April 11), when they host Oberlin College at 3:30 p.m., and on
Saturday (April 14), when they host Allegheny College at 1 p.m.
