Men's Tennis Drops Two in Hilton Head
The College of Wooster men's tennis team has lost its first two
matches on its annual spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C., falling 6-1 to
Georgetown College and 7-0 to an unbeaten Univ. of the South squad, while
its match against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was cancelled due
to the rain.
Against Georgetown on March 13, Wooster won the doubles point, but
saw the Tigers sweep the singles competition. In fact, Georgetown won every
singles match in straight sets except for one, that being sophomore Clint
Bailey's 6-3, 3-6, (9-7) setback at No. 6 singles.
In doubles play, the Scots captured victories at No. 1 and No. 3 to
earn the point. Senior Rob Ogg and junior Jake Sintich claimed a
closely-contested top flight by a score of 8-7 (7-5), while freshman Nilesh
Saldanha and junior Jim Sayed took third doubles by an 8-5 margin.
Four days later, Wooster played No. 24 ranked Univ. of the South,
marking the second time in five matches that the Scots have played a
nationally-ranked team this spring.
Unfortunately, the Tigers were just too much, as they nearly swept
the Scots en route to their 10th victory in as many tries this year, tying
a school record for the best start to a season.
Ogg and Sintich teamed up again and won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, as
the all-conference duo from a season ago improved to 3-0 in 2001.
Additionally, Sintich had the closest singles match against the Univ. of
the South, losing 7-5, 7-5 at third singles.
Wooster, now 1-4, will wrap up its series of matches in Hilton Head
on Wednesday, March 21, with a meeting against Illinois Wesleyan University
at noon.
