Men's Tennis Just Misses Out on Sweep of ONU
A third-set tiebreaker was the only thing that kept The College of
Wooster men's tennis team from bringing out the brooms against Ohio
Northern University on Thursday (March 30), in Ada, Ohio, as Wooster topped
its non-league opponents 6-1.
The Scots would have swept had it not been for Ohio Northern's
Brian Meilton edging freshman Nilesh Saldanha 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), (7-3) at
first singles.
Wooster opened the match by earning the first point with victories
at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Senior Rob Ogg and junior Jake Sintich teamed
up at the top position and dispatched their opponents 8-5, while seniors
Matt Bierlein and Kirk Lapham shutout Ohio Northern's No. 3 team 8-0.
The Scots' No. 2 through No. 6 singles players each won their
respective matches in straight-sets led by a convincing 6-0, 6-1 decision
for Sintich at the second flight. Other winners included Ogg, who rebounded
from a 2-5 deficit in the first set to claim a 7-5, 6-4 decision at third
singles; Bierlein, a 6-4, 6-4 victor at No. 4; junior Jim Sayed, who posted
a 6-4, 6-2 decision at the fifth position; and sophomore Clint Bailey, who
was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 6.
Also noteworthy, senior Paul Wiley teamed up with Sayed at second
doubles. The duo lost 8-4, but it was good news for Wooster to have Wiley
back in the lineup for the first time in almost a year due to a rotator
cuff injury.
Next up for the Scots is their home opener on Saturday (March 31),
against Wittenberg University at 1 p.m.
