Men's Tennis Slips to 1-1 On the Year
In its second match of the season, the College of Wooster men's
tennis team got off to a slow start by losing the doubles point to host
Walsh College and couldn't catch up, as the two squads split the six
singles matches, giving Walsh the 5-4 victory.
Seniors Matt Bierlein and Kirk Lapham needed to win a tiebreaker
(7-3) to record Wooster's only doubles victory at the No. 3 position, while
the Cavaliers won the top two flights 8-3 and 8-5, respectively, to earn
what turned out to be the decisive point in the match.
In singles play, the Scots displayed their depth by doing well at
the bottom of the lineup, but struggled at the top where Walsh's Derek
Steinberg topped freshman Nilesh Saldanha 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 1 and Jeff
Johnston beat senior Rob Ogg 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.
Wooster junior Jake Sintich picked up a win in the closest match of
the day, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Keith Genetti at third singles, but
Bierlein lost to Lucien Nuessle in a close two sets 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4. The
Scots' Brandon Lichtman and Marc Patterson swept past their opponents at
fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Lichtman, a sophomore, won 6-4, 6-4
against Adam Keys, while Patterson, a freshman, posted a 6-2, 6-1 decision
over Jason Leffler.
Wooster does not play again until March 10 when it will face-off
against Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va., at 11 a.m.
