Men's Tennis Loses 6-1 to Wittenberg
Wittenberg University took advantage of The College of Wooster's
patched-up lineup and defeated the hosts 6-1 in men's tennis action
Saturday afternoon (March 31) at Wooster.
Despite two of its starters missing and pairing up a doubles team
that hadn't played with each other all season, the Scots swept Wittenberg
in doubles to earn the match's first point.
Senior Paul Wiley, making just his second appearance after a long
layoff due to a rotator cuff injury, and first with junior partner Jake
Sintich upended Bryan Heft and Casey Claggett at the top doubles flight 9-8
(7-4). Seniors Matt Bierlein and Kirk Lapham had the most decisive doubles
match, winning 8-5 at No. 2 over Eric Cusick and Mark Swart, while freshman
Nilesh Saldanha and sophomore Brandon Lichtman outlasted Duby Lakos and
Mike Herzog 9-7 at No. 3.
It was a different story in singles play, however, as the Tigers
swept Wooster.
Saldanha lost 6-1, 6-4 to Heft at first singles, Sintich lost a
three-setter to Claggett at No. 2 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-4, and Wiley dropped a
6-4, 2-6, 6-3 decision to Cusick in the third position.
The bottom half of the order started with a 6-2, 6-2 loss for
Bierlein against Lakos, followed by junior Jim Sayed losing to Herzog 6-4,
7-5 at No. 5, and ending with sophomore Clint Bailey's three-setter against
Ben Hodgkiss-Lilly (4-6, 6-1, 6-3).
The Scots, who are now 3-5 on the season, continue their homestand
on Tuesday (April 3), when they host Ohio Wesleyan University (1-7, 0-1
North Coast Athletic Conference West Division) at 3:30 p.m.
