Scots Cruise Past Ohio Wesleyan 6-1
The College of Wooster easily got by Ohio Wesleyan University in men's tennis action on Saturday (Feb. 26) afternoon, losing only one match en route to a 6-1 victory, and opening the spring season 3-0 for the second consecutive year. Though the match was against a conference member, it does not count in the league standings because the North Coast Athletic Conference is divided into two five-team divisions for men's tennis. Freshman Conor Boyle suffered the only loss of the day for Wooster at the No. 1 singles position, dropping in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) to the Battling Bishops' Dave Kubacki. Senior captain Alec Garnett came back with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 slot, followed by freshman Grant D'Augustine at No. 3 with a straight set win (7-6 (4), 6-2). Sophomores Brian Ebbitts and Dan Fleszar also won in straight sets at No. 4 (6-3, 6-3) and No. 5 (6-1, 6-3), respectively, while freshman Ted Hickey easily overcame his opponent at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-1. In doubles action, Garnett and Hickey teamed up at No. 1 to best Kubacki and Dilshad Abeygunawardana with an 8-5 decision. Ebbitts and Fleszar also won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, while Boyle and senior Chris Mickelson handled their opponents 8-1 at the No. 3 spot. The Scots are off until their trip to Hilton Head, S.C. during spring break from March 17-23. Wooster will play seven matches during the week, before returning for a contest with Case Western Reserve University on March 31 at home. |
