The College of Wooster men's tennis team got its season underway this past weekend winning both ends of a doubleheader against Wabash College (7-0) and Saint Joseph's College (Ind.) (8-1) inside the Collett Tennis Center in Crawfordsville, Ind. Though the first match was against a conference member, it doesn't count in the league standings because the North Coast Athletic Conference is divided into two five-team divisions for men's tennis.

Wooster easily overpowered the Little Giants, winning each of its single matches in straight sets. Freshman Conor Boyle made his collegiate debut at No. 1 a good one, cruising past his opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Also taking the court for the first time were freshman Grant D'Augustine and Ted Hickey who posted victories at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1) and No. 4 (6-2, 6-0). Senior Alec Garnett, and sophomores Brian Ebbitts and Dan Fleczar won at No. 2 (7-5, 6-1), No. 5 (6-2, 6-3), and No. 6 (6-1, 6-1), respectively, while the Scots won two of three doubles matches to complete the sweep.

In the second match of the day, the Scots dropped just one singles match en route to an 8-1 victory over Div. II Saint Joseph's. Wooster's top three players won their matches handily as Boyle (7-6 (5), 6-3), Garnett (6-1, 2-6, 6-2), and D'Augustine (6-0, 7-5) picked up the victories at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3, respectively. After suffering a setback at the No. 4 position, the Scots came back to easily win the final two Ąprosets.” Also noteworthy, Hickey and Garnett led a clean sweep in doubles action with an 8-2 victory at No. 1.

Next up for Wooster is the first home match of the season against Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, Feb. 26, at noon.
