Wooster Opens Spring Season With 6-1 Win Over Wabash
The College of Wooster men’s tennis team utilized its depth for a 6-1 season-opening victory over Wabash College on Saturday in Oberlin, Ohio, as the Fighting Scots’ No. 2 through No. 6 singles players each won in straight sets. Prior to singles play, Wooster scored the match’s first point via a doubles sweep. The closest match of the day came at No. 1 doubles, with the Scots’ regionally-ranked team of Brian Ebbitts and Ted Hickey edging Wabash’s top tandem 9-7. Wins at the second and third doubles positions came easier for Wooster, with Dave Albrechta and Dan Fleszar teaming for an 8-3 decision and Grant D’Augustine and Pat Grab triumphing 8-2, respectively. Outside of a 6-4, 6-2 setback at the top of the lineup, the Scots dominated in singles. Albrechta prevailed 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, D’Augustine gave up just two games at the third spot (6-2, 6-0), Ebbitts was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 4, Hickey posted a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the fifth position, and Tim Wyatt won a tiebreaker in the first set at No. 6 as part of a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory. Next for Wooster is a match at Ohio Wesleyan University on Feb. 28. |
