The College of Wooster men’s tennis team kicked off its 2007 season Saturday with a pair of matches at Wabash College, first easily defeating the hosts 8-1 and then falling by the same score to regionally-ranked University of Chicago.

In the Wabash match, it was 2-1 after the doubles competition, but then the Fighting Scots swept the singles competition to easily prevail. Picking up wins in doubles were the tandems of Grant D’Augustine and Pat Grab at No. 2 (8-4) and Brian Ebbitts and Dan Fleszar at No. 3 (8-4).

Will Morrison got another year at No. 1 singles off to a good start, dispatching his opponent 6-4, 6-1, while D’Augustine, playing his first career match at No. 2, triumphed 6-2, 6-2. At the third spot, Ebbitts was pushed to a first set tiebreaker before bageling his opponent in the second (7-6, 6-0). The bottom half of Wooster’s singles lineup also swept in straight sets, with Grab at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1), Sam Hickey at No. 5 (6-2, 7-5), and Jeremy Dominik at No. 6 (6-3, 6-0).

Dominik made it a perfect weekend, as he produced Wooster’s lone point in the Chicago match, this time winning a third set super tiebreaker 11-9 after splitting the first two 6-3, 4-6.

Wooster is off until Feb. 28 when it hosts Ohio Wesleyan University (0-1) at 4 p.m.
