Scot Track Third (Men), Sixth (Women) at NCAC Relays

The College of Wooster men’s indoor track and field team scored 66 points to finish third at the nine-team North Coast Athletic Conference Relays this past weekend (Feb. 1), while Wooster’s women’s squad placed sixth with 36.5 points at the annual event hosted by Denison University.

The Scot men were one point shy of second-place Wittenberg University (67), while Allegheny College took home team honors with 81 points. Ohio Wesleyan University and Wabash College tied for fourth (60), while host Denison also reached the 50-point mark (51).

The Big Red captured the women’s title with 96.5 points, followed by Allegheny (78), Wittenberg (60), and Oberlin College and Ohio Wesleyan (50).

Individually for Wooster, Keith Vance highlighted the meet by throwing a school record in the shot put for the second time in as many weeks, as he reached the 50-foot plateau (50’02.50") for the first time in his career. He combined with Nick Miller’s throw of 40 feet, six inches, to give the Scots the win in that event (90’08.50").

Wooster was also highly successful in the jumping events, winning the triple jump relay (84’04.25") and coming in second in the long jump relay (40’03.75"). Nii Djan Tackie took first overall in the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, nine inches, while James Williams won the long jump with his length of 20 feet, 9.25 inches. Djan Tackie added a fifth-place effort in the long jump (19’06.50"), while Corey Humphrey helped give the Scots the win in the triple jump with a fourth-place individual performance (40 feet, 7.5 inches).

The men’s other win came via the pole vault, as Nathan Collins’ first-place showing (13 feet, six inches) and Doug Reiser’s third-place heighth of 12 feet, six inches combined to give Wooster 26’00.00", more than two feet better than its nearest competitor.

The Scot men’s other notable was Taylor Delhagen’s individual fifth-place finish in the 5000 meters (16:06.54).

In women’s action, Wooster was highlighted by a third-place tie in the pole vault, as first-years Jessica King and Alexa McCarthy had matching marks of seven feet, six inches, to give the team a total of 15 feet even in the relay.

Individually, Nicki Artes came in fourth in the shot put (36 feet, five inches) and Leigh Hutchison tied for eighth in the high jump (four feet, eight inches).

The Scot track teams will return to action this Friday, Feb. 1, in Cleveland, Ohio, where they will take part in the Case Western Reserve University Invitational, starting at 6 p.m.
