Keith Vance and Jill Berner set College of Wooster indoor track and field school records in the shot put and pole vault, respectively, in kicking off the team's 2003 campaign at Oberlin College's Lid Lifter Meet on Friday night (Jan. 24). The three-team, non-scoring meet also involved Notre Dame (Ohio) College.

Vance, a junior and two-time defending North Coast Athletic Conference champion in the shot put, threw 49 feet, 3.75 inches, surpassing the previous best mark by a Scot of 48 feet, seven inches. That was accomplished by both Shane Bartholomew (2001) and Lu Wims (1961).

The Wooster men were also strong in other field events, as sophomore Nii Djan Tackie took first in both the long jump and triple jump with leaps of 20 feet, five inches, and 42 feet, six inches, respectively. Senior teammate Corey Humphrey was runner-up in each event (19'2" long jump and 38'8.25" triple jump) and junior James Williams tied for second in the long jump (19'2"). The Scot pole vaulters also fared well, with junior Nathan Collins coming in first by clearing a height of 13 feet, 6.25 inches.

On the track, the Wooster men swept the top-three places in the 55 meters, 55-meter hurdles, and 1,000 meter run. Freshman Matt Knepp, also a football player, took first in the sprint (6.87); senior Michael Jourden won the hurdle event (9.12); and senior Evan McDaniel crossed the line ahead of the 14-member pack in the meet's lone distance race (2:42.79).

Berner, competing in her first collegiate meet, bested the Wooster record in the pole vault by clearing 9 feet, 6.25 inches - more than six inches better than the previous school mark (8'11.75") set last season. Also in that event, fellow first-years Jessica King and Alexa McCarthy followed Berner in second (6'11.75") and third (6'6"), respectively.

Senior Nicki Artes was the only other Scot to earn first-place honors, as she did so in the shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 7.5 inches.

Next up, Wooster will travel to Denison University in Granville, Ohio, this Saturday (Feb. 1) for the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Relays, starting at 2 p.m.
