Scots Finish Fifth (men), Sixth (women) at Greater Cleveland Championships
The College of Wooster indoor track season continued this weekend with the men and women competing at the Greater Cleveland Championships in Berea, Ohio, and hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College. The men's squad finished fifth in the six-team field with 47 points, while the women came in sixth with 27 total points. Wooster picked up three first-place finishes on the men's side, all in the last five events of the day, to overtake Hiram College (30 points) for the fifth-spot. Freshmen Ross Stevenson and Tristan Jordan led the way with first-place finishes in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches) and the triple jump (41 feet, 7.75 inches), respectively, while Rick Drushal topped the field in the shot put with a heave of 46 feet, 7.5 inches. Alan Waddell also picked up some big points down the stretch with a second-place finish in the pole vault (11 feet). Other top finishers on the men's side included Jon Prince with a fifth-place showing in the 400 meters (55.80), and Colin Turner with sixth and third-place finishes in the 500 meters (1:10.18) and 1000 meters (2:41.51), respectively. On the women's side, Jill Berner accounted for nearly one-third of Wooster's points with a second-place showing in the pole vault as the junior cleared 10 feet exactly. Sophomore Alexandra Thonis and junior Kathy McCreary pulled out third-place finishes in the 200 meters (30.14) and 800 meters (2:33.61), while freshman Nicole Calderone finished one-place ahead of McCreary (1:28.15) in the 500 meters with a fourth-place finish (1:26.80). Also earning points for the Scot women was freshman Kelly Patton with a sixth-place showing in the 55 meter hurdles (9.71). Wooster's indoor track season continues next week with the Oberlin Invitational on Friday, Feb. 25. Events are slated to begin at 6 p.m. |
