Junior pole vaulter Jill Berner led The College of Wooster track and field teams in the first meet of the outdoor season this past weekend (March 18-19), as the Scots competed at the non-scoring Florida State Relays in Tallahassee, Fla. The meet, which traditionally features 40-50 colleges, many from Div. I, and club teams, was divided into two groups for each event - a gold championship for the top competitors and a garnett championship for the rest (Florida State's school colors).

Most of Wooster's student-athletes competed in the garnett division, which was highlighted by Berner's fourth-place finish in the pole vault (10 feet, six inches).

Also on the women's side, sophomore Katie Wieferich led a pack of Scot runners in the 1500 meters, as she took eighth-place with a time of 4:59.17. Tiffany White and Kathy McCreary managed top-20 finishes in the same race, crossing the line in 17th (5:14.07) and 20th (5:24.03), respectively.

In the 400 meters, freshman Darcy Poland began her outdoor season with a 20th-place showing (1:03.99), while fellow first-year Nicole Calderone finished 25th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:36.37.

On the men's side, senior Matt Linman managed a 15-place showing, while competing in the 5000 meters gold division, finishing the race in a time of 15:59.27. Sophomore Rick Drushal had the Scot men's highest finish of the day, placing 10th in the discus with a throw of 119 feet, one inch.

Also for the Scots, junior Colin Turner had a 13th-place showing in the 1500 meters (4:10.31) and Seth Stuck opened his first outdoor season with a 16th-place effort in the 400 meters (55.54). Jonathen Prince finished 17th in the 800 meters, finishing the event in 2:04.97.

The Scots continue their outdoor season down south this week by participating in the Emory Invitational on Saturday, March 26, in Atlanta, Ga.
