Four Scots Earn All-Conference Honors at NCAC Meet

The College of Wooster’s track and field teams both came in eighth in their respective fields, with the men tying for that position, at this weekend’s North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

Overall, the Wooster women scored 57 points, while Allegheny College won the team championship (217) and Ohio Wesleyan was runner-up (117.5), while the Scot men’s squad, tallied 26 points, as did Hiram College, and Allegheny made it a sweep, taking the men’s crown (232) by more than 100 points over second-place Wabash College (130).

While Wooster did not fare as well as hoped in the team standings, four individuals brought home all-conference honors via top-three showings.

Among the Scot women’s top performers was Ada Smith, who scored in three events, led by a third-place finish in the discus (111 feet, 3 inches). Along with the first All-NCAC award in her career, Smith took seventh in the shot put (32 feet, 1.5 inches) and eighth in the hammer throw (86 feet, 8 inches).

Also in the throws, Jocelyn Barker placed sixth in the discus (100 feet, 9 inches).

Wooster’s other all-conference performer on the women’s side was Jill Berner, who cleared 10 feet, 3.5 inches in the pole vault, good for second-place. Kate Legg added a sixth-place showing in that event (8 feet, 4 inches).

On the track, the Scots’ best event was the hurdles, as Kelly Patton and Heather Reed raced their way to fourth- and sixth-places finishes, respectively, in the 100-meter event with times of 15.88 and 16.83. Patton contributed a fifth-place run in the 400-meter hurdles (1:09.24) as well.

Another event with double scorers was the 1500 meters, in which Katie Wieferich came in fifth (4:58.48) for Wooster, followed closely by teammate Emily Moore in seventh (5:09.12).

Rounding out the Scots’ individual scorers were high jumper Dana Doran-Myers, who tied for seventh (4 feet, 11.75 inches), Darcy Poland, who took seventh in the 400 meters (1:03.15), and Kathy McCreary, who crossed the line seventh in the 800 meters (2:27.69).

Two Wooster men earned All-NCAC recognition – Taylor Delhagen and Rick Drushal. Delhagen covered the 10,000 meters in 32:29.12, placing third, just over 30 seconds off the winner’s pace, while Drushal was third in the shot put (45 feet, 9 inches).

The Scot men had one individual score twice in Tristan Jordan, who leaped to seventh- and eighth-place efforts in the triple jump (40 feet, 2.75 inches) and long jump (20 feet, 1.75 inches), respectively.

Just as the women did, the men performed well in the hurdles, with Matt Jensen and Rob Kelm taking fifth (16.36) and seventh (16.71), respectively, in the 110-meter race, while Colin Turner capped Wooster’s scoring via a sixth-place run in the 1500 meters (4:05.63).
