Track & Field Gets Season Under Way at Oberlin Quadrangular

The College of Wooster indoor track season officially began Friday night (Jan. 21), as head coach Dennis Rice took a handful of competitors up to Oberlin College to compete in a quadrangular, featuring individuals from Hiram College, Notre Dame College (Ohio), and the host school.

The Scots competed in 15 of the 27 events, managing one win on the women's side, and 15 top-five finishes in all. Junior standout Jill Berner began the defense of her North Coast Athletic Conference title in the pole vault by clearing just over 10 feet en route to grabbing Wooster's lone win on the day.

In other women's action, the Scots had three fourth-place finishers as Kelly Patton, Sarah Hammond, and Dana Doran-Myers started off the season with good showings in the 55-meter hurdles (10.30), 55-meter dash (8.40), and 600-meter run (1:57.38), respectively.

On the men's side, the Scots had three second-place finishers, including Rick Drushal in the shot put. The sophomore managed a throw of 43 feet, 4.4 inches, finishing behind Landon Huvler (47 feet, 11.6 inches) from Notre Dame. Also picking up second-place finishers were Ross Stevenson in the high jump (5 feet, 8.16 inches) and Tristan Jordan in the triple jump (38 feet, 1.92 inches).

Other notables from the men's squad include Jon Prince and Robert Kelm with fourth-place finishes in the 600-meter run (1:32.10) and 55-meter hurdles (8.74), respectively, and Colin Turner and Tim Presto who went 4-5 in the 1000-meter run, finishing in 2:46.29 and 2:47.17, respectively.

The Scots jump full-stride into the indoor season with its first big test against conference foes next weekend, as teams from around the NCAC meet up in Granville, Ohio, on Saturday, Jan. 29, for the NCAC Relays at Denison University.
