Berner, Jordan Lead Scots at Oberlin Invite

The College of Wooster men's and women's indoor track and field squads competed at the non-scoring Oberlin Invitational on Friday (Feb. 25), as a final tune up before the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships next weekend (March 4-5) at Denison University. The Scots had 19 top-five finishes on the day, including two individuals claiming the top spot in their respective events.

Junior Jill Berner, the defending NCAC champion in the pole vault, picked up a first place finish by clearing 10 feet, 6 inches, one-half foot better than the second-place finisher. Kate Legg earned a tie for third in the same event, clearing 8 feet, 6.25 inches.

Also picking up top-five finishes on the women's side were Heather Reed and Kelly Patton in the 55 meter hurdles, coming in third (9.62) and fourth-place (9.65), respectively, while Darcy Poland, Nicole Calderone, and Hannah Bierlein finished second (1:04.42), fourth (1:06.32), and fifth (1:07.11) in the 400 meters, respectively. Sophomore Katie Wieferich came in second in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:47.34, just eight seconds out of first.

The men's top finisher was freshman Tristan Jordan who beat out a field of three to grab first-place honors in the triple jump with a combined leap of 39 feet, 8.5 inches. Rick Drushal finished second in the shot put with a toss of 45 feet, 2.25 inches, just 1.5 inches behind first, while Ross Stevenson also picked up a runner up spot in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 7.75 inches.

Robert Kelm and Matt Jenson finished 3-4 in the 55 meter hurdles, crossing the line in 8.53 and 8.61, respectively, while Colin Turner finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.82. The men's other top finisher on the day was Alan Waddell in the pole vault with a third-place finish (11 feet, 5.75 inches).

The NCAC Championships will take place in Granville, Ohio next Friday and Saturday (March 4-5).
