Scots Host Wooster Invitational Amid Snowy Conditions

Amid winter conditions in Wooster, Ohio, The College of Wooster and five other schools, Cuyahoga Community College, Defiance College, Denison University, Kenyon College, and Ohio Wesleyan University, competed in 22 track and field events at the Wooster Invitational on Saturday. The meet, which was a non-scoring affair, was cut short due to the weather, but not before the Scots reeled off eight victories on the day, including two by sophomore Rick Drushal in the discus throw and the shot put.

Drushal took the discus event with a heave of exactly 127 feet, besting his nearest competitor by four feet. He also beat out Ryan Stoltz of Defiance by 2.5 inches in the shot put with a throw just over 41 feet. Junior Marco Garcia took third in the same event with a throw of 40 feet exactly.

Freshman Jalam Cutting nearly equaled Drushal's win total, taking the 200 meters over teammate Mark Ballinger by .06 seconds (24.12-24.18), and finishing second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.87.

Other notables on the men's side include three top-five finishers in the 800 meters as Colin Turner led the pack with a time of 2:01.02, followed closely by Zachary Patterson and Jonathan Prince in fourth (2:06.01) and fifth (2:06.38), respectively. In addition, Rob Kelm and Matt Jensen were third (1:02.05) and fourth (1:06.73) in the 400 meter hurdles, and junior Taylor Delhagen came up second in the 5000 meters with a 16:16.05 finish.

On the women's side, freshman Darcy Poland claimed a victory in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.21, edging Ohio Wesleyan's Jamie Harden by just 0.62 seconds. Fellow freshman Nicole Calderone finished third in 1:04.15.

Also picking up a win was Kelly Patton, who claimed the top spot in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:11.38, followed by Heather Reed and Margaret Howland in fourth (1:15.99) and fifth (1:16.47), respectively.

Senior Lizzie Smith placed second to teammate Jocelyn Barker (99 feet, eight inches) in the discus with a throw of 93 feet, five inches, and then finished second in the shot put with a heave of 28 feet, 2.25 inches.

Other top finishes for the women included a third-place showing by sophomore Emily Rackley in the 800 meters (2:44.13) and a second-place effort by classmate Katie Wieferich in the 1500 meters (5:10.30).

Wooster's season continues next weekend on Saturday, April 9, at the Mt. Union Invitational in Alliance, Ohio.
