Kenyon Wins 16th NCAA Swimming Title

Kenyon head coach Jim Steen has overseen the Ladies' unprecedented success since 1984.
OXFORD, Ohio - Kenyon College continued its dominance of the NCAA Women's Division III Swimming and Diving Championships by capturing its 16th consecutive title Saturday at Miami (Ohio) University.

Kenyon, which began its amazing string of titles in 1984, totaled 664.5 points during the three-day event to finish well in front of second-place Denison University which tallied 503 points. Williams College was third with 355.5 followed by the University of California at San Diego in fourth with 348 and Hope College with 218.

Sophomore Erica Carroll, named Swimmer of the Year at the meet, led the way for Kenyon by setting her second meet record with a time of 2:01.78 to win the 200-yard backstroke. She was also a member of the Kenyon 400-yard freestyle relay team which finished first with a time of 3:25.74 on Saturday. Earlier in the meet Carroll set the 100-yard butterly meet record time and won the 100-yard backstroke.

In addition to Carroll, two other Kenyon swimmers won their second titles during Saturday's events. Senior Amelia Armstrong swam to a first place in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:58.31. Armstrong had won the 400-yard individual medley on Friday.
