If the weather holds, it will be a very busy week for The College of Wooster as currently on the schedule are four home doubleheaders, two being of the North Coast Athletic Conference variety. First, on Monday, April 7, fellow northeast Ohio school John Carroll University (7-13) will visit Wooster in a make-up of games originally slated for March 27. Last year, the two split a twinbill, with John Carroll prevailing 5-3 and then the Fighting Scots coming back for a 7-6 victory. Wooster then returns to NCAC play, hosting first-place Allegheny College (13-9, 4-0 NCAC) on Wednesday, April 9, at 3:30 p.m. as well as Denison University (11-3, 1-1 NCAC) on Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m. Wooster will be looking to avenge sweeps by both opponents from last season, when Allegheny triumphed 9-1 and 11-5 and Denison 5-0 and 10-1. Also on tap for this week is Bethany College (8-10), head coach Lori Schimmel’s alma mater, as the Bison will be in Wooster on Sunday, April 13, at 1 p.m. The annual match-up was cancelled last year due to weather.

Last Week: Wooster went 1-3 in its first two NCAC doubleheaders of the season, slipping to 11-11 overall.

On April 3, Katelynn Caywood (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) delivered an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning, propelling the Scots to a 4-3 win in their conference opener at Hiram College, but the Terriers came back for a 10-6 victory during game two to earn the split. Tied 3-3 after seven innings, Wooster won in extras when Priscilla Staples (Stoughton, Mass. / Fontbonne Academy) walked, moved to second on a fielder’s choice and to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Caywood’s two-out clutch hit. It had been 1-1 until the top of the sixth. That frame, Natalie Worcester (Wellington, Ohio / Wellington) doubled home Rachel Gaines (Burghill, Ohio / Badger) and Andrea Kelley (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville South). Kelley pitched the first seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six, before giving way to Ronni Wasmuth (Farmersville, Ohio / Valley View), who faced the minimum during the eighth and ninth to earn the win (2-1). In the nightcap, Gaines and Kim Skully (Brooklyn Hts., Ohio / Cuyahoga Heights) each went 3-for-4, but it was not enough as Hiram’s offense exploded for multi-run innings in the first, third, fourth, and fifth.

On April 5, Wittenberg University’s pitching staff limited the Scots to just three hits during a 7-0, 12-0 NCAC sweep. Wooster was in the first game until a three-run fifth inning made it 6-0, and in the nightcap, it was close until the rival Tigers batted around in a nine-run fourth inning. Recording the Scots’ lone hits were Caywood with a double and Gaines and Skully with singles, while Ali Barone (Akron, Ohio / St. Thomas Aquinas) and Courtney Joliat (Canton, Ohio / St. Thomas Aquinas) each walked.
