Scot Softball Spanks Centenary
Wooster's softball team needed just six and one-half innings to
sweep Centenary and win its first two games of its first season since 1986.
The Scots, who evened their record to 2-2, combined to outscore the winless
Cyclones 39-0.
"We're just real happy and excited to get the first victories for
the College," said Wooster head coach Lori Jefferes following the
doubleheader.
In game one, Wooster broke a scoreless tie in the top half of the
third inning, tallying 13 runs and going on to the 20-0, four-inning
run-rule game.
Despite all of the firepower on offense, the highlight of the game
was freshman Serena Sword's no-hitter on the mound. She faced 13 batters,
one over the minimum, and struck out four Centenary batters en route to the
school's first-ever no-hitter.
"Serena threw the ball very well and had great control against
everybody she faced," commented Jefferes.
Offensively, junior Emily Gamber was the star, as she collected two
triples and drove in seven runs in four at bats. Senior Jill Miller added
five runs batted in and a double, while junior Abbie Perry went 1-for-1
with three of the Scots' 17 walks.
The middle of Wooster's order, consisting of freshman Abby
Petrullo, sophomore Megan Hogue, and senior Chris Wasiluk, combined to walk
eight times and score nine of the team's 20 runs.
The Scots did not even need to play four innings in game two, as 19
Wooster players crossed the plate in the first two innings before the run
rule came into effect in the bottom of the third inning.
Four Scots had multi-hit games, including Miller who went 2-for-2
with a triple and one run batted in. Hogue was 2-for-3 from the plate with
a double and four runs batted in, while Petrullo went 1-for-2 with a
double, stole a base, and drove in four runs.
Freshman Anika Lehman took the mound for game two and emerged with
the win after giving up zero runs on four hits in three innings of work,
while striking out four. Lehman also contributed to the offense, going
2-for-3 with four runs batted in.
