Wooster Softball Gets Swept By John Carroll

The College of Wooster softball team nearly upset John Carroll in the first game of its doubleheader today in University Heights, Ohio, but ended up getting swept by the Blue Streaks 3-2 and 7-3.

The Scots, who saw their record fall to 2-4 on the season, took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning of game one, thanks to a two-run home run by freshman Abby Petrullo in the top of the sixth. However, John Carroll tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh to send it into extra innings.

Then, Blue Streak senior Melissa Samblanet led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a home run off of Wooster starter Serena Sword to end the game. On the day, Sword gave up eight and two earned runs, while stranding seven runners on base.

Other than Petrullo's home run, the Scots had trouble producing offense against freshman pitcher Marie Shaver, who ended up with 15 strikeouts in game one. Senior Chris Wasiluk was able to go 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base, but sophomore Kady Krivos was the only other Wooster player to register a hit.

Game two was a different story, as John Carroll took control early on with four runs in the first two innings. The Scots scored twice in the third, but the Blue Streaks responded with three over the next two innings.

Wooster freshman pitcher Anika Lehman suffered her worst outing yet, giving up 10 hits, six walks, and six earned runs. Offensively, Petrullo went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, while sophomore Kerri Horst batted 2-for-3 from the plate.
