The College of Wooster split with visiting Ohio Wesleyan University this afternoon (April 25) in North Coast Athletic Conference softball action at Galpin Park, as the Battling Bishops won the opener 4-3 in nine innings and the Scots were victorious in game two by a score of 5-3. With the split, the two teams remain tied for sixth in the NCAC standings with identical 2-8 league marks. Ohio Wesleyan, which now owns an overall record of 6-8, battled back from a 2-0 deficit in game one and eventually scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie. Bishop freshman Nicole Rubeck led off the ninth inning with a single off of Wooster freshman Serena Sword, who was in the midst of her first relief appearance, and then scored the game-winning run with two outs on a costly error by the Scots. Prior to that sequence of events, Wooster had taken a 2-0 lead in the second, only to see Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Kim Dubovec lace a two-run double to tie the game in the top of the fifth, which sent freshman starter Anika Lehman out of the game. Dubovec scored later that inning, giving Ohio Wesleyan a 3-2 lead. However, Wooster bounced right back with a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a pair of doubles by sophomore Kerri Horst and freshman Abby Petrullo. Lehman pitched well before being pulled in the opener, as she went 5.1 innings and gave up just three hits and three walks. Sword held the Bishops to two hits over the final 3.2 innings before allowing the unearned run and being credited with the loss. Offensively, Horst and Petrullo each went 2-for-5 for the Scots, while freshman Sarah Moorhouse and senior Chris Wasiluk had two stolen bases apiece. In the nightcap, Wooster had to weather a rally by Ohio Wesleyan, as the Bishops cut a 4-1 Scot lead down to one run in the top of the sixth. In fact, Sword stranded an Ohio Wesleyan runner that had reached third base with one out that inning and then got the final out of the game with the bases loaded in the seventh. The key for Wooster in game two was a three-run third inning, giving the Scots a two-run advantage after they had allowed another unearned run in the opening frame. Junior Kate Joynt led off the third with her first career triple, followed by back-to-back singles by Moorhouse and Lehman, who both eventually scored. Sword pitched all of game two, limiting the Bishops to one earned run on seven hits and two walks en route to her fourth win of the season on the mound. Joynt and Moorhouse each went 3-for-3 from the plate in game two, while Petrullo was 2-for-3.
