Wooster Softball Debuts With Two Close Losses
The College of Wooster softball team played its first games since
1986 today in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and came away with a pair of losses to
Rhode Island College. Defense was the difference, as the Scots combined to
make 10 errors, allowing four unearned runs to cross the plate in the
doubleheader.
The Anchorwomen took a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning of game
one, but had to withstand a furious Scot rally before winning 4-2. The
second game was similar with Rhode Island College going ahead 4-0 before
Wooster scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the first game, Scot freshman pitcher Serena Sword performed
well in her debut, allowing just one earned run in seven innings of work.
Offensively, Wooster received big games from sophomore Kerri Horst and
senior Jill Miller, who each went 2-for-3. Also, Horst and freshman Abby
Petrullo produced a triple apiece in the opener.
The second game saw the Anchorwomen pull away from the Scots with a
three-run fifth inning against freshman Anika Lehman. On the day, she gave
up six hits and three earned runs, while pitching a complete game. A force
on the offense as well, Lehman went 2-for-3 with a run batted in during the
second game. Also, freshman outfielder Sarah Moorhouse added a double,
while Petrullo walked twice and stole a base.
