Softball Suffers Setback Against NAIA Power
» Box Score
For the second time in as many days, The College of Wooster
softball team played an opponent that was ranked among the country's best
in the NAIA, but Wooster did not fare as well on Tuesday, losing 19-1 to
Caldwell College in Orlando, Fla.
After falling 3-0 on Monday to Olivet Nazarene University, which
ended last year ranked 10th in the final NAIA national poll, Wooster took
the field against Caldwell, a team that was in the "others receiving votes
category" in this season's preseason poll.
Aided by eight Scot errors, eight walks, and three wild pitches,
the Cougars had a nine-run second and an eight-run fourth inning en route
to their comfortable victory.
Offensively, Wooster was limited to four hits by Caldwell's Corinne
Reiser, who struck out eight, but the Scots did manage to belt a pair of
doubles, coming off the bats of senior Emily Gamber and junior Kady Krivos.
Junior Megan Hogue and Krivos added singles as well.
Sophomore Anika Lehman started for the first time this year and
picked up the loss, following two innings of work in which she gave up 10
runs, five of which were unearned, on five hits and four walks. Freshman
Nell Schieber came in to relieve Lehman, but did not fare much better,
allowing nine runs, including four unearned tallies, on seven hits and four
walks.
The Scots, now 0-3 on the young season, will try and get into the
win column over the next two days, as they have doubleheaders lined up
against SUNY at Cortland and Bethany College.
