The College of Wooster softball team picked up its first win of the season in dramatic fashion on Wednesday afternoon, coming back from a 2-0 deficit against the State University of New York at Cortland, tying the game in the seventh and then winning it with a run in the eighth.
Cortland State, which went on to take the nightcap in Orlando, Fla., by a score of 14-0 in five innings, was three outs away from a victory in the opener, but reliever Amanda Waite watched two unearned Wooster runs cross the plate, which sent the game into extra frames.
Again in the top of the eighth, the Scots scored on an unearned run to take a 3-2 lead. Then in the bottom half of that inning, freshman Angie Barone put the finishing touches on her five-hit, six-strikeout, complete game for her first collegiate win.
Four hits, highlighted by a 2-for-3 performance by freshman second baseman Brianne Diorio and freshman center fielder Lindsay Vargo's first career double, and three Red Dragon errors led to Wooster's three runs.
Game two saw Cortland State take control early on with four runs in the top of the first and seven in the third, while the Red Dragons' two pitchers combined for a one-hitter en route to the victory.
The Scots' lone players to reach base were freshman center fielder Christy Shadle on a single and freshman designated player Maggie Combs on a walk.
On the mound, Nell Schieber, yet another member of Wooster's freshmen class, got the loss, allowing nine earned runs over five innings on 12 hits and seven walks.
The Scots' wrap up their spring trip on Thursday with a double-dip against head coach Lori Jefferes' alma mater - Bethany College.
