It was a bit of an up-and-down weekend (April 7-8) for The College
of Wooster softball team, as it started out by getting blasted 18-0 by
Denison University and then coming back to nearly upset the powerful
Denison squad before losing 2-0 on Saturday. Wooster followed that
performance on the road with a 3-6, 2-0 split against Carlow College at
home on Sunday afternoon.
Against the Big Red, the Scots committed five errors in the opener,
which led to a handful of unearned runs that were scored off of freshman
starter Nell Schieber, who had her own troubles. Schieber ended up evening
her season record at 3-3 after allowing 15 hits and walking five Denison
batters.
Offensively, Wooster was not able to do much in game one either, as
the Big Red's Courtney Zollars held the Scots to just three hits - a double
by freshman outfielder Christy Shadle and two singles.
Game two was a much different story, though, as it was a 0-0 tie
after three innings. Then, Denison finally got to freshman starter Angie
Barone, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Barone pitched well overall, tossing a complete game and giving up
just three hits, while striking out eight batters, but she didn't get
enough support to prevent her from falling to 3-6 on the year.
The Scots managed three singles, including the second of the day
for both freshman Brianne Diorio and junior Kady Krivos, but no runs off of
Denison's Robin Shesky.
On Sunday, Wooster grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the opener against
Carlow, but went on to watch the Celtics score six unanswered runs and
eventually lost by three.
The Scots belted 10 hits off of Carlow's Jen Blumling, but only
converted them into three runs. Recording multi-hit games were junior
Kerri Horst, who went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice, freshman Kirsten Lucas, who
batted 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, sophomore Abby Petrullo, who was
2-for-4, and freshman Lindsay Vargo, who also went 2-for-4.
On the mound, Schieber was credited with the loss, giving up four
earned runs on seven hits and four walks with two strikeout victims, while
Blumling got the victory.
The nightcap against the Celtics turned out to be a masterpiece by
Barone, who tossed her second career shutout, allowing just three hits and
striking out 16 of a possible 21 batters.
All the offense came in the bottom of the third when Horst stole
home on a double steal play, and Lucas singled in Shadle for one of her
game-high three hits.
After a busy weekend, Wooster now owns a 7-12 overall record and
0-2 mark in conference play, and will return to action on Tuesday (April
10), when it travels to league foe Allegheny College (5-14, 0-2 NCAC) for a
twin-bill, starting at 3 p.m.
