The College of Wooster softball team welcomed John Carroll
University to Galpin Park on Wednesday (March 28) and sent their Ohio
Athletic Conference opponent home without a victory, as Wooster picked up
its first sweep of the season.
In game one, the Scots were down 3-0 heading into the bottom of the
fourth, but exploded for 11 runs over the next two innings to take a
five-run lead. John Carroll fought back to score four in the top of the
sixth to cut the lead to 10-9, but Wooster plated two more and won 13-10.
Wooster freshman Lindsay Vargo had a breakout game, going 4-for-4
from the plate with a pair of doubles and her first collegiate home run.
She also scored three times and drove in five others.
Also hitting 4-for-4 was junior Kerri Horst, while junior Kady
Krivos added three hits in four at bats.
Additional multi-hit games by Scots were turned in by junior Megan
Hogue, senior Kate Joynt, and freshman Christy Shadle. Hogue was 2-for-3
with a pair of sacrifices and a steal; Joynt went 2-for-4, including her
second triple of the season, with two runs and two RBI; and Shadle was
2-for-4 with a double, a steal, and a pair of runs driven in.
On the mound, freshman Nell Schieber threw a complete game and
registered her first collegiate win. She gave up 14 hits and walked three,
but five of the Blue Streaks' 10 runs were unearned.
The Scots' bats stayed hot early in the nightcap, scoring four runs
in the first two innings and that lead would hold up behind the pitching of
freshman Angie Barone, who held John Carroll to one hit - a two-run home
run in the top of the seventh by freshman Danielle LoVaglio.
Barone struck out 15 of a possible 21 batters and only walked four
en route to her third victory.
Offensively, Krivos added a single, a double, and a pair of RBI,
while freshman Kirsten Lucas batted 2-for-3.
Wooster will try and keep its three-game winning streak alive
against LaRoche College this Saturday (March 31) at 1 p.m.
