Playing its third consecutive home doubleheader on Saturday afternoon (March 31), The College of Wooster softball squad split with LaRoche College, coming back from an early 3-0 hole to win the first 8-5 and watching a 3-0 lead turn into a 4-3 setback in the nightcap.

In the opener, LaRoche put up three runs in the first off of starter Nell Schieber, but Wooster answered with one in the first and a two-run double by junior Megan Hogue to tie it in the second.

The Redhawks retook the lead in the third, but the Scots responded with two in that frame on back-to-back RBI hits by sophomore Abby Petrullo and freshman Lindsay Vargo.

LaRoche tied it again in the top of the fourth, but Wooster was finally able to put it away with a big three-run fifth inning, thanks to Hogue coming through again with a single that plated two runs, giving her four RBI on the day.

Along with Hogue, Petrullo and Vargo each had multiple hit games for the Scots.

After a shaky start, Schieber settled down to earn her second collegiate win, going all seven innings. Three of the Redhawks' runs were unearned and she struck out two without walking any.

Wooster appeared to be headed to its fifth-straight victory in game two, as the Scots gave ace pitcher Angie Barone a three-run lead in the third on a three-run double by Vargo.

Barone was cruising right along until the sixth inning, when she all of the sudden walked four of the first five batters that frame. After a sacrifice fly pulled LaRoche within one, Leigh Dunn doubled in two to give the Redhawks the lead.

Vargo went 2-for-3 for the second-straight game, while Barone picked up the loss after allowing just four hits, but walking nine.

Wooster will look to return to its winning ways on Tuesday (April 3), when it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa., for a double-dip against Carlow College, starting at 4 p.m.
