The College of Wooster softball team opened the 2001 campaign by dropping a pair of three-run decisions to Western New England College and Olivet Nazarene University in Orlando, Fla., on Monday.

Wooster got its season off to a strong start by plating two runs in the opening frame, but Western New England responded with four in the top of the second to take a two-run lead. The Scots answered with three in the bottom of the third to regain the lead, but the Golden Bears outscored Wooster 5-1 the rest of the way to win 9-6.

Six Scots laced base hits, including freshman designated player Maggie Combs, who went 2-for-4. Junior third baseman Kady Krivos had a double and drove in a pair of runs, while sophomore shortstop Abby Petrullo also added a double and senior catcher Kate Joynt belted a triple.

Getting the start on the mound against Western New England was freshman Nell Schieber, who tossed 5.1 innings and gave up eight runs, three of which were unearned, on six hits and two walks. Classmate Angie Barone allowed one run on a hit and a walk in the remaining 1.2 innings.

Game two saw Olivet Nazarene score three in the first two innings and hold off Wooster for a 3-0 win behind the pitching of freshman Elisabeth Beirne.

Beirne limited the Scots to just three singles, which came off the bats of freshmen Brianne Diorio, Kirsten Lucas, and Lindsay Vargo, and one walk.

Barone pitched well for the Scots, giving up just two earned runs on seven hits and six walks, while striking out nine and pitching the complete game.

Wooster has a single game lined up against Caldwell College and a pair of doubleheaders against SUNY at Cortland and Bethany College later this week.
