Women Swimmers Win, Men Lose at John Carroll
The College of Wooster's swimming and diving teams came away with mixed results at John Carroll on Saturday afternoon, as the women's squad came away with a convincing 149-104 victory over the Blue Streaks, while the men suffered a 123-111 setback.
The women's team improved its dual-meet record to 3-0 on the season, while the men's squad dropped to 1-2.
The Scot women dominated the meet, jumping out to leads of 13-4, 39-16, and 63-30 before eventually prevailing by the 45-point margin. Leading the way for Wooster was freshman Erin Popelka, who placed first in both the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.83 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:25.46.
Other Scot winners included senior Leah Becki in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.24), freshman Jody Bray in the 500-yard freestyle (5:22.76), senior Laura Dunn in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.36), and sophomore Jessica Ritchie in the 50-yard freestyle (25.97).
The men's meet went back and forth most of the day, and Wooster was only two points behind John Carroll heading into the final four events, before the Blue Streaks prevailed by 12 points. The Scots won both the 200 medley and free relays, and had two individual winners. Junior Wes Bennett won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21:39, while freshman sensation Alex Hastie continued his successful season with a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.09.
