The College of Wooster men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to action on Jan. 12, after their annual winter training trip in Fla., by competing in a tri-meet at Case Western Reserve University, along with conference rival, Oberlin College. The men's squad split the meet, posting a victory over Oberlin (57-32) and falling to Case Western Reserve (75-48), while the Wooster women won both meets, defeating the Yeowomen 68-37 and the Lady Spartans 65-39 to improve its dual-meet record to 5-0.
Individual wins from the Scots women came from senior Beth Starling in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.22), sophomore Jen Jenkins in the 100 backstroke (1:05.67), sophomore Kayla Heising in both the 50 (24.97) and 100 freestyles (55.06), and freshman Liz Whittam in the 200 individual medley (2:12.02). Also placing first was the 200 freestyle relay of freshman Sophie Brym, sophomore Sonya Tarasenkov, sophomore Tanya Tarasenkov, and freshman Kate Henley (1:48.70), and the 200 medley relay of Whittam, junior Jenny Bayuk, Heising, and Tanya Tarasenkov (1:59.23).
"The women continued their strong showing with easy victories over Oberlin and Case Western," Wooster head coach Keith Beckett said. "The combination of victories and additional placements by Wooster swimmers assured both victories."
For the Scot men, placing first against Oberlin were sophomore Jim Gilchrist in the 200 individual medley (2:05.11), senior Jason Maines in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.74), as well as sophomore Curtis Wolfe in the 50 freestyle (23.00). Notable relay results included the 200 medley relay of freshman Austin Carter, Maines, sophomore Sam Almy, and senior Eric Knauss with a time of 1:48.60, and the 200 freestyle relay of freshman Dale Doershuk, Almy, freshman Clint Nicely, and Wolfe in 1:37.30.
"It was a satisfying victory for the men to beat conference rival Oberlin," commented Beckett. "We were pleased with many of the swims, especially after a very demanding winter training trip."
Next up for Wooster will be league rival Ohio Wesleyan University at home on Saturday (Jan. 19), starting at 1 p.m.
