The College of Wooster swimming teams returned home from John Carroll University on Saturday (Nov. 17) with a win for the women (157.5-82.5) and a close loss for the men (111-139). Wooster's women easily defeated John Carroll, winning 11 of 13 events and bringing its dual meet record to 3-0, while the Scot men won three races en route to slipping to 1-2.
On Saturday, Wooster continued to receive some especially strong swims in women's action. Scot freshman Liz Whittam won the 400 individual medley and bettered her national cut with a time of 4:39.12. Senior Sara Connolly outscored the Blue Streaks' divers in both the one- (224.60) and three-meter (229.45) competitions. Wooster's other doublewinner was sophomore Jody Bray, hitting the wall first in both the 500 and 1000 freestyles in times of 5:24.20 and 11:09.32, respectively. Also, freshman Sophie Brym led a Scot sweep in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.21, followed by sophomore Amy Clark (1:02.42) and freshman Kate Henley (1:04.55).
Other individual winners for Wooster were sophomore Kayla Heising in the 50 freestyle (24.66), sophomore Sonya Tarasenkov in the 100 freestyle (56.11), senior Lori Mitskavich in the 200 freestyle (2:03.26), and freshman Nicole Greene in the 100 backstroke (1:04.65).
"This was an easy victory for the women, supported by a blend of good and average performances," said Scot head coach Keith Beckett, as he reflected on the John Carroll meet while looking ahead to the team's next meet - the Akron Invitational. "It was challenging for the women to compete at a higher level when they were significantly ahead of the competition. We look to this to be a catalyst, as we prepare to compete in the second-largest college swimming invitational in the U.S."
Wooster's young men's team continued to take strides against the Blue Streaks and produced strong swims in a number of events. Sophomore Jim Gilchrist claimed first-place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:07.59, while another win came from sophomore Curtis Wolfe in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 22.34.
The Scots' also performed well in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of sophomore Mike Durik, sophomore Giles Mitchell, senior Eric Knauss, and freshman Dale Doerschuk touched first (1:31.80), followed in second by teammates Wolfe, freshman Bryant Cameron, sophomore Sam Almy, and freshman Zane Clanton (1:35.52).
"The outcome of the men's meet was not as exciting (for us) as that of the women's, however, the men entered with a 23-point deficit due to diving events," Beckett explained. "In addition, lack of accurate scouting information resulted in a lineup that was not as strong as it could have been against John Carroll's strengths."
Wooster now has its sights set on its biggest meet of the season outside of the conference and NCAA Championships - the Akron Invitational - which will take place Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
