The College of Wooster men's and women's swimming and diving teams kicked off their competitive season this weekend with a strong showing in dual meets against Mount Union College on Friday (Nov. 2) and Wittenberg University on Saturday (Nov. 3). Wooster's women posted two wins, defeating Mt. Union at home 139-66 and Wittenberg on the road 154-86, while the men were victorious over the Purple Raiders 134-84 but fell to the Tigers 139-84.
Standouts on the Scot women's team included six national-qualifying performances, one school record, two Wooster pool records, and five Wittenberg pool records. Freshman Liz Whittam set the pace, winning the 200 freestyle against Mt. Union with an NCAA-qualifying time as well as a school- and pool-record of 1:55.09. Whittam also had a national cut in the 200 individual medley, while winning the event and breaking a Wittenberg pool record (2:10.72). She wrapped up her individual weekend by placing first in the 200 backstroke with a Tiger-pool record of 2:12.54.
Whittam also joined junior Jenny Bayuk and sophomores Kayla Heising and Tanya Tarasenkov for a national-qualifying mark in the 200 medley relay (1:51.17). Against Wittenberg, the Scots' 400 medley relay team of Whittam, Bayuk, senior Beth Starling, and freshman Sophie Brym established a pool record with a time of 4:08.11. Rounding out the relays, the 400 freestyle squad of Heising, senior Lori Mitskavich, freshman Kate Henley, and Tarasenkov placed first and set another record in the Tigers' pool (3:46.62).
Heising turned in an individual national cut and Wooster pool record against Mt. Union in the 50 freestyle (24.44), and on Saturday set a Wittenberg pool record in the same event with a time of 24.92. Also posting national-qualifying marks were Starling in the 200 breaststroke during her win in the event at Wittenberg (2:28.25), and senior diver Sara Connolly, who has qualified for the NCAA's in the one-meter competition with her score of 251.80.
"The women's team had a spectacular weekend," said veteran Scot head coach Keith Beckett. "There were strong contributions across the board. This was a great way to start our dual meet season, and a promising beginning."
On the men's side for Wooster, there were also some impressive swims, highlighted by five individual first-place finishes in the victory against Mt. Union. They were sophomore Mike Durik in the 1000 freestyle (11:12.89), sophomore Jim Gilchrist in the 200 individual medley (2:04.09), senior Jason Maines in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.60), sophomore Giles Mitchell in the 100 freestyle (50.90), and sophomore Doug Reiser in one-meter diving (134.70).
On Saturday, Gilchrist won the 200 individual medley again, this time hitting the wall in 2:06.06. The Scots also swept the 200 backstroke led by freshman Kevin Wolfe (2:05.42) and followed by Gilchrist (2:05.66) and freshman Dale Doershuk (2:14.71).
"The men's team swam well this weekend, and had a decisive victory over Mt. Union," Beckett commented. "I am happy with their performance. Though we lacked depth in some areas, they gave a consistent effort this weekend."
Wooster next heads to Meadville, Pa., on Nov. 9-10 for the Allegheny College Invitational.
