The College of Wooster's swimming and diving teams kicked off their respective seasons on Saturday (Oct. 27) at Kenyon College with the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Relays. Wooster's women's squad finished second of eight teams with 128 points, while the men accumulated 46 points for a ninth-place finish.

The Scot women demonstrated their depth by finishing third in every event except for a second-place showing in the 400 individual medley and fourth in the 200 breaststroke relay. The 400 individual medley relay, which consisted of freshman Liz Whittam, junior Jenny Bayuk, senior Beth Starling, and freshman Sophie Brym, finished as the close runner-ups to Kenyon and beat out Denison University with a time of 4:14.90.

Other notable swims for the women included the 200 freestyle relay of freshman Kate Henley, Whittam, sophomore Tanya Tarasenkov, and sophomore Kayla Heising (1:40.50), and the 200 butterfly relay of Heising, Starling, Whittam, and Brym (1:50.30).

Wooster head coach Keith Beckett was pleased with the women's 2001-02 debut.

"Despite the absence of some familiar names to the roster this year, the women displayed true character and didn't miss a beat. In fact, they swam faster and scored more points at this meet than last year."

The Scots' youthful men's team was even younger on Saturday, as five upperclassmen were unable to attend the opening meet. Strong swims for them included the fourth-place 200 backstroke relay team, consisting of freshman Kevin Wolfe, sophomore Cutis Wolfe, freshman Austin Carter, and freshman Dale Doreshuk (1:46.10), and the 1500 freestyle relay of sophomore Adam Yack, sophomore Mike Durik and Kevin Wolfe which also finished fourth (16:10.97).

"The younger squad stepped up and showed a lot of determination during its first meet of the season," Beckett commented "Although I would like to have known where we might have placed swimming with a full roster, I am pleased with the performance of both teams. We had a strong first showing and this was a great beginning to our 2001-2002 season."

Results were not available from the diving portion of the NCAC Relays, which were held at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, at the time of this release.

Next, Wooster hosts Mt. Union College in a dual meet on Friday (Nov. 2), and then travels to Springfield, Ohio, to face off against NCAC rival Wittenberg University on Saturday (Nov. 3).
