Scot Women Tankers Stay Perfect, But Men Fall to Westminster
Junior Kayla Heising, the school record holder in the 50 freestyle (23.74), set a new mark at Timken while winning that event with a national-cut time of 24.09, and was also part of both relays that recorded provisional-qualifying marks for the NCAA Championships. She teamed with sophomore Liz Whittam, senior Jenny Bayuk, and junior Tanya Tarasenkov on the winning 200 medley relay (1:50.05), and with Tarasenkov, Sonya Tarasenkov, and sophomore Kate Henley on the top 200 freestyle relay team (1:39.46). The Scot women swimmers had first-place times in every event led by Whittam, a double winner in the 100 backstroke (1:02.88) and 200 freestyle (2:00.76). Fellow returning All-Americans Sophie Brym, Sonya Tarasenkov, and Bayuk picked up victories in the 400 individual medley (4:48.25), 100 freestyle (55.33), and 100 breaststroke (1:09.21), respectively. In the distance events, senior Jody Bray placed first in the 500 freestyle (5:26.76) and sophomore Elizabeth Roesch hit the wall a minute faster than her nearest competitor in the 1000 freestyle (10:52.49), while rounding out the Wooster wins was Amy Clark, a junior, in the 100 butterfly (1:01.07). In men's action, the Scots' young divers continued to contribute points in bunches as freshmen Todd Koenig and Aaron Bergman took 1-2 in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. Koenig registered scores of 198.60 (one-meter) and 204.00 (three-meter), while Bergman scored 170.45 (one-meter) and 180.35 (three-meter). Wooster's first-place effort in the swimming portion of the meet came from the 200 freestyle relay of junior Mike Moore, sophomore Clint Nicely, freshman Joe Silvestri, and freshman David Brumbaugh with a time of 1:33.04. The Scot swimmers and divers will not compete this week due to the Thanksgiving break, and will return to action with one of their biggest meets of the year, the Giant Eagle Zippy Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron from Dec. 5-7. |
