The College of Wooster women’s swimming and diving team remained unbeaten in duals this year, posting a 131-101 win over traditional Ohio Athletic Conference power John Carroll University on Saturday (Nov. 8). Wooster’s men’s squad put up a good fight, but succumbed to the Blue Streaks by a slim margin of 117-114, as the meet came down to the final event of the afternoon.

The Scot women were able to up their record to 3-0 with 1-2-3 sweeps in two events. In the 100 freestyle, first-year Adrienne Smith, senior Sonya Tarasenkov, and sophomore Gretchen Nofsinger took first (56.52), second (56.79), and third (58.89), respectively. The other sweep occurred in the 200 backstroke, with sophomores Kim Chambers and Patti Ross, and senior Jen Jenkins hitting the wall one after another in 2:12.06, 2:20.44, and 2:22.04, respectively.

Other Wooster victors included the 400 medley relay team of Chambers, junior Liz Whittam, and seniors Amy Clark and Kayla Heising (4:07.48), while individually, junior Elizabeth Roesch won both the 1000 freestyle (10:35.20) and the 500 freestyle (5:12.64), and Chambers added another first-place in the 200 individual medley (2:16.41). Also noteworthy, Heising won the 50 freestyle with a time (24.17) that initially qualifies her for this year’s NCAA Championships in an event that she finished second in the nation last season, while Clark earned top honors in the 200 butterfly (2:18.91) and Whittam won the 200 freestyle (2:01.33).

In men’s action, the Scots produced five wins, including three in the pool. Freshman Brandon DuGar, juniors Clint Nicely and Zach Carter, and senior Curtis Wolfe teamed up to take the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.28). Individual victories were turned in by freshman Nathan Bray in the 1000 freestyle (10:42.40) and senior Jim Gilchrist in the 200 backstroke (2:08.92).

On the boards, sophomore divers Aaron Bergman and Todd Koenig each posted a first-place, as Bergman won the one-meter (193.90) and Koenig placed first in the three-meter competition (179.75).

Wooster continues its dual-meet schedule next weekend with a trip to Westminster (Pa.) College on Saturday (Nov. 22), at 1 p.m.
