The College of Wooster’s men’s and women’s swimming teams kicked off their respective seasons on Saturday (Oct. 25) with the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Relays, hosted by Kenyon College but taking place in Wooster simultaneously at the YMCA (swimming) and Timken Natatorium (diving). The Scots’ women’s team tied for third place with Wittenberg University (120 points), finishing behind Kenyon College (170) and Denison University (160), while the men finished ninth with 52 points.

The Wooster women finished in the top-five of all eight swimming relays again this year, highlighted by three second-place finishes. In the first event of the afternoon, the 200 medley relay team of sophomore Kim Chambers, junior Liz Whittam, and seniors Kayla Heising and Tanya Tarasenkov touched the wall in 1:52.07 to take runner-up honors for the Scots (1:52.07). Heising and Chambers also teamed up in the 500 freestyle relay, alongside senior Sonya Tarasenkov and junior Sophie Brym, and the group posted a second-place time of 4:44.53. The Scots’ third second-place relay was the 200 butterfly, consisting of Heising, Brym, Whittam, and senior Amy Clark (1:50.69).

Wooster’s men’s team produced three top-10 performances at the NCAC Relays. The relay of sophomore David Brumbaugh and seniors Jim Gilchirst, Mike Moore, and Sam Almy swam to a ninth-place finish in the 200 backstroke (1:47.10). Later, freshmen Brandon Dugar and Dan Noble teamed up with Moore and Almy to post the Scots’ highest finish of the day — sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:42.08) — while Moore, Dugar, Noble, and senior Curtis Wolfe joined forces to hit the wall eighth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.13).

Wooster’s season begins in earnest Oct. 31-Nov. 1, when the Scots host Mt. Union College on Friday at 5:30 p.m., and then take a road trip to rival Wittenberg University on Saturday with competition starting at 1 p.m.
