Scot Men Climb Three Spots Over Final Two Days to Take Third at Own Invite
The College of Wooster men's swimming and diving squad exceeded its own expectations with a third-place showing at the nine-team Wooster Invitational this past weekend (Dec. 4-6), hosted at the Ellen Shapiro Natatorium at Wooster High School. Initially aiming for a fourth-place finish and in sixth after the first day of competition, Wooster moved up three spots over the second and third days, totaling 1030 points. Case Western Reserve University and Ashland University finished 1-2 with 1636 and 1273 points, respectively, while the Scots ended up ahead of Westminster (Pa.) College (1006.50), a team that they lost a dual to earlier this season. None of the other five competing schools reached the 1000-point mark. The Scots divers produced some important scoring, with Aaron Bergman and Todd Koenig placing first and second, respectively, in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions, highlighted by totals of 291.35 and 286.40 on the three-meter board. In the pool, Wooster's best event was the backstroke. The 100 saw Sam Almy and David Brumbaugh finish third and fourth, respectively, with times of 55.18 and 56.02, while Almy and Kevin Wolfe turned in respective third- (2:01.21) and fifth-place (2:02.43) performances in the 200. The Scots placed multiple individuals in championship heats in two other events. In the 400 IM, Wolfe was fourth overall (4:27.81), followed by teammate Adam Yack in eighth-place (4:37.29), while the duo teamed up in the 200 butterfly, too. Wolfe came in fifth (2:07.48) and Yack earned seventh (2:09.24). Also noteworthy, Nathan Bray posted a fourth-place swim in the 1650 freestyle (17:20. 78), and Brandon DuGar took fifth in the 100 butterfly (53.11) and seventh in the 100 freestyle (49.28). Wooster's highest relay finish came in the 200 freestyle, in which DuGar, Curtis Wolfe, Almy, and Dan Noble hit the wall fourth with a mark of 1:29.72. |
