The College of Wooster began its swimming and diving dual meet season on a high note this weekend, as the men swept each of their meets with Mt. Union College (162-61) and Wittenberg University (126-113), while the women defeated the Purple Raiders (155-62), but came up short against the Tigers (101-136). The Scot men begin the year 2-0, while the women are 1-1.

Wooster’s men’s team won 10 of 12 events on Friday (Oct. 29) against Mt. Union in Timken Natatorium, while on Saturday, they took seven of 13. The relays were a major part of both wins as the Scot relays won all four competitions, beginning with the 200 medley (1:45.49) and 200 freestyle relays (1:31.34) taking first against the Purple Raiders. Wooster was just as good a day later, winning the 400 medley relay in 3:52.54 against Wittenberg to start the day, and ending the competition by claiming the top two spots in the 400 freestyle relay with times of 3:23.93 and 3:31.77.

Sophomore Kyle Oaks was a major contributor on three of the four relays and also was a factor individually, taking home first in the 100 backstroke (1:00.50) and 50 freestyle (23.32) against Mt. Union and Wittenberg, respectively. Junior Dan Noble put up an impressive three individual wins, first in the 200 freestyle (1:54.22) against the Tigers, and then in the 100 freestyle (2:06.64) and 200 IM (2:06.64) against Mt. Union, as well as being in on the 200 and 400 medley relays.

Additional multiple winners included sophomore Matt Dominski in the 50 (23.43) and 100 freestyles (51.45) against the Raiders and freshman Andrew Olsen in the 200 (1:54.68) and 500 freestyles (5:07.59) against Wittenberg. Sophomore Alex Gauvin placed first (200.80) and second (211.35) in the 1-meter diving competition against Mt. Union and Wittenberg, respectively, in addition to a second-place showing (192.10) against the Tigers on the 3-meter.

On the women’s side, Wooster won 11 of 12 competitions against Mt. Union and four of 13 against Wittenberg. The Scots took three of the four relay races over the two days, winning the 200 medley (1:45.49) and 200 freestyle (1:31.34) against the Purple Raiders and taking the 400 freestyle (3:47.94) against the Tigers.

Individually, senior Kim Chambers swam her way to three victories in the 200 IM (2:15.25), 200 freestyle (1:59.50), and the 500 freestyle (5:21.83), while freshman Meggie Edwards made an impressive showing her first dual meet competition this fall, winning the 100 backstroke (1:02.10) in convincing fashion against Mt. Union, and touching the wall first in the 50 (25.47) and 100 freestyles (55.59) against Wittenberg.

First-year Molly Bittner produced a pair of wins against Mt. Union, first edging classmate Lindsey Dorko by just over a second (1.39) in the 200 freestyle (2:05.07), and then winning the 100 butterfly in 1:04.31. Dorko picked up a win in the 100 freestyle (57.33) against the Raiders, just ahead of sophomore Denise Koessler (58.22), who had won the 50 free earlier in the day with a time of 26.94.

Freshman Julie Piznur produced a win in the 1-meter diving competition against Mt. Union with a score of 167.95, while she finished second on both the 1-meter (157.15) and 3-meter (154.10) against the Tigers.

Wooster’s dual meet season continues next Sunday, Nov. 6, as the Scots play host to Millikin University in Timken Natatorium at 2 p.m.
