Volleyball Comes In Second At Another Tournament
The College of Wooster volleyball team finished a busy weekend
(Sept. 7-8) as the runners-up in an eight-team tournament for the second
time already this fall. After placing second at the previous week's
Marietta Tournament, Wooster finished just shy of the championship at a
tournament hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa., this
time around.
The Scots won their division in round-robin play, sweeping past
Thiel College (30-16, 30-24, 30-27) and Carlow College (30-27, 30-26,
30-28), and earning a hard-fought, five-game decision over Washington &
Jefferson College (30-27, 30-27, 25-30, 29-31, 15-11).
In the semifinals of bracket play, Wooster beat Marietta College
for the second-straight week, but this time it was in four games (30-27,
30-24, 24-30, 30-24), one less than last week. The Scots lost in the
championship match (15-30, 16-30, 31-29, 20-30), but managed to take a game
from host Carnegie Mellon, which no other team had done during the
tournament.
Individually, Wooster was led by junior Erin Donnell and freshman
Becky Rohlfs, who were each voted on to the six-member all-tournament team.
For Rohlfs, it marked her second all-tourney honor in a row.
Donnell paced the Scots in the attack department with 70 kills,
while also leading the squad in digs (41). Rohlfs, who turned out to be the
primary setter for the weekend due to an ankle injury sustained by junior
Beth Moore, topped the team with 231 assists. She also made other
contributions, totaling 22 digs, a Wooster-best 16 service aces, and 15
kills.
Also continuing to play well was Kelly McAllister, as the freshman
tallied 62 kills and the Scots' top kill percentage (.218). She also added
35 digs and 11 aces, while senior Jen Petkovsek finished up the event with
39 kills, 40 digs, and 30 total blocks.
Other notables in the statistical column included freshman Allison
Kovacs's 38 kills and eight blocks, freshman Abbey Harvey's 28 digs and
seven service aces, as well as freshman Molly Rallo's 16 kills.
Next up, Wooster has its home and North Coast Athletic Conference
opener on Tuesday (Sept. 11) against Kenyon College at 7 p.m.
