Scots Finish Third At Own Kilt Classic
The College of Wooster volleyball team finished in third-place out of eight teams at the Kilt Classic, held at Timken Gymnasium this past Friday and Saturday. The Scots went 3-2 on the weekend, improving their overall record to 6-4. Festivities kicked off Friday night at 6:00 p.m. as the Scots took on West Liberty State College. Wooster easily handled the Hilltoppers, winning 3-0 (30-12, 30-21, 30-22). The final match on Friday night featured the Scots against Westminster College. The Titans fought hard, stealing the second game, but a strong defensive effort pushed the Scots to the win in four (30-17, 26-30, 30-21, 30-24). At the conclusion of the second day Wooster looked in good shape with a 2-0 record and tied for first in their pool with Heidelberg College. The Student Princes were the Scots next opponent and proved they were the better team, although the Scots managed to win the third game. Wooster went down in four games (21-30, 17-30, 30-24, 16-30) and next faced Urbana University, the number one seed out of the second pool. The Scots’ and Blue Knights’ second game of the match was one of the best of the tournament, as the two teams battled well into what can be considered overtime in volleyball. Urbana and Wooster battled back and forth through the 30s and 40s, with no side able to get the two points necessary to claim the victory. However, the Knights pulled through in the end, winning the game 46-44, and the match in three (30-26, 46-44, 30-23). Wooster’s last match was for third place in the tournament as the team faced off against Bluffton College. The Scots overpowered the Beavers 3-0 (30-19, 30-23, 30-23), claiming the three-spot for the third consecutive year. Sophomore Sarah Marschall was the Scots’ lone representative on the all-tournament team as she averaged 1.41 kills and 1.47 blocks per game. Junior Tiffany Rice led the offensive effort, totaling 59 kills (3.47 k/g) while freshman setter Heather Wolff set up the attack with 10.35 assists per game. Defensively, the Scots were led by junior libero Mary-Kate Fowkes as she averaged 6.59 digs per game. Marschall and sophomore Ashley Quisenberry minded the net, combining for 43 total blocks. The Scots’ next match will be Wednesday, Sept. 15, as John Carroll enters Timken Gymnasium for a non-conference match. |
