Scot Women Fall to Ohio Wesleyan by 15-Point Margin
Box Score
DELAWARE, Ohio - Despite double-doubles from Nara DeJesus (Geneva,
Ohio / Geneva) and Morgan Ramsdell (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview),
The College of Wooster fell short in its upset bid against perennial power
Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday night, falling 76-61 in North Coast
Athletic Conference women's basketball action.
In Wooster's first contest in 11 days, DeJesus, a sophomore, racked
up 22 points and 10 rebounds in just 29 minutes of action as she was
plagued with foul trouble, while Ramsdell, a senior starting her first game
since Nov. 24, 1998, complemented her frontcourt mate with 19 points and 13
boards.
However, the battle of the post players was won by Ohio Wesleyan
veterans Katy Sturtz and Jessica Viertlboeck, who combined for 61.8 percent
of the Battling Bishops' points and 56.4 percent of their rebounding.
Sturtz, a junior, had game-highs in both scoring and rebounding with 29
points and 14 caroms, while Viertlboeck, a senior, added 18 points and
eight boards.
Wooster was within striking distance of the two-time defending NCAC
regular season champions, trailing 45-39 with less than 13 minutes to play.
But the Scots went cold shooting the ball, only making one field goal
attempt over a 4:38 time period, while Ohio Wesleyan took an insurmountable
lead by going on an 11-2 run.
"We played 30 minutes of the game," stated Wooster head coach Lisa
Campanell Komara. "Then, our offense broke down when they went into a 2-3
zone. We couldn't get our guards free to get some good shots off."
When the Wooster guards did get their shots off, they had trouble
finding the basket, as the Scots' six perimeter players went 5-of-30 on the
night from the field, including 1-of-7 from three-point land.
The Bishops backcourt did not fare much better, as their guards
combined for a 6-of-20 night from the floor, including 1-of-5 from beyond
the arc. However, that did not matter as Sturtz connected on 13-of-16 shots
from the field, many of which came off her eight offensive rebounds, and
Viertlboeck hit 6-of-12 field goal attempts.
Other than DeJesus and Ramsdell, Campanell Komara did not receive
much point production, as sophomore Kristen Rice (Wooster, Ohio /
Northwestern) and junior Stephanie Woodruff (Toledo, Ohio / Sylvania
Northview) were next in the scoring column with six points apiece.
Also notable, sophomore guard Michaelyn Brunner (Bethel Park, Pa. /
Bethel Park) dished out a team-high four assists in her first career start
with the Scots.
Wooster, which slipped to 1-2 overall on the year, returns to
action on Saturday, Dec. 1, when it hosts the first game of a men's and
women's doubleheader against Earlham College, starting at 1 p.m.
The Bishops improved to 3-1 overall on the young season.
