WOOSTER, Ohio - Fourteen College of Wooster women's basketball players scored in an 84-41 rout of Ursuline College in the opening round of the fifth annual Nan Nichols Tournament Friday night at Timken Gymnasium.
Wooster will meet Ohio Dominican College, which held off a late rally by Westminster College (Pa.) to win 71-69 in the other first round match-up, in the title game on Saturday, Dec. 9, following the consolation contest which pits Ursuline against Westminster at 2 p.m.
The Arrows were overmatched from the outset, as the Scots jumped out to a 12-2 advantage. Ursuline stopped the bleeding momentarily, cutting the lead to seven, but Wooster continued to dominate play and led by as many as 17 in the opening stanza, including the halftime break score of 38-21.
The Scots put any thoughts of a comeback away early in the second half, as they put together a monumental 29-4 run to start the second 20 minutes of action.
Freshman Lindsey Schaaff (Loveland, Ohio / Mount Notre Dame) came off of the bench to lead Wooster with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, while sophomore Kristen Rice (Wooster, Ohio / Northwestern) was next with 10 points, hitting 4-of-5 field goal attempts.
Sophomore Nara DeJesus (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) and freshman Abby Cook (Girard, Ohio / Youngstown Ursuline) shared the team-high rebounding total with seven boards apiece, while senior Joci Horn (Cincinnati, Ohio / Ursuline Academy) had a game-best four assists in the victory.
Ursuline, which only had seven active players on its roster, had two of its team members reach double figures in the scoring column - freshmen Margie Kall and Kari Carmondy, who tallied 12 and 10 points, respectively. Lauren Street had a game-high 13 rebounds for the visitors.
For the second time this year, the Scots forced their opponents into 38 turnovers, 23 of which resulted in steals, and held the Arrows to just 24.2 percent (15-of-62) shooting from the floor.
Wooster improved its overall record to .500 on the year and will be gunning for its first championship in the Nan Nichols Tournament since 1996 on Saturday afternoon.
