Scot Women Lose 69-46 to Washington & Jefferson

WOOSTER, Ohio - For the fourth-straight year, The College of Wooster women's basketball team finished runner-up at its Nan Nichols Classic, falling 69-46 to Washington & Jefferson College in the championship game of the seventh annual event on Sunday afternoon.
Washington & Jefferson (2-0) led wire-to-wire, as it bolted out to an 11-2 lead in the first five minutes and never was ahead by less than six the rest of the way.
The Scots (1-1) trailed 28-16 at the half and opened the second with an early rally to pull within 41-35 at the 13:55 mark. However, the Presidents built their advantage back up to double-digits shortly thereafter en route to the 23-point victory.
Leigh Sulkowski led a very athletic Washington & Jefferson squad, as she garnered tournament Most Valuable Player honors with 20 points on 9-of-15 field-goal shooting against Wooster after gunning for 27 points on 10-of-13 attempts from the floor in the first round game.
The Presidents' Amy Strosnider had a big tournament as well, totaling 32 points and 19 rebounds, including 18 and nine, respectively, on Sunday, and getting the nod for defensive MVP, while teammate Shawndra McDonald, who had six points, seven assists, and five steals versus Wooster, rounded out their all-tournament-team selections.
The Scots' top individuals throughout the two-day event were post players Alexis Louttit (Lodi, Ohio / West Holmes) and Kristen Rice (Wooster, Ohio / Northwestern). After a double-double on Saturday, Louttit came back with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds against Washington & Jefferson, while Rice paced the squad in scoring each game, including 12 on Sunday.
Also noteworthy for Wooster, junior wing Jen Flavin (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton-LaSalle) hit 4-of-6 shots for eight points in 17 minutes of action on her birthday.
Earlier in the day, NAIA foes Daemen College and Wilberforce University matched-up in the consolation contest with Wilberforce winning 80-74. Darla Finley of Wilbeforce nearly notched her second double-double of the tourney on Sunday, scoring 14 points and grabbing nine caroms en route, while Daemen's Angela Tylec also earned all-tournament honors after leading her squad each game with 19 on Sunday and 15 on Saturday.
The Scots do not play again until Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Notre Dame College (Ohio), at 7:30 p.m.
