Women's Lax Loses Home Opener to Div. II I.U.P.
Box Score
The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team may have dropped to
0-3 on the season Sunday (March 25) after a 12-11 overtime loss to Indiana
University of Pennsylvania, but it continued to show the improvement it has
made since last season.
In 2000, I.U.P. prevailed 10-7 in regulation, but this time around
Wooster, which lost by three goals this past Thursday to a team that had
beaten the Scots 11-5 last year, pushed the Indians to overtime and nearly
pulled off an upset against the NCAA Division II institution.
I.U.P. got off to a quick start on Sunday. After the Scots had tied
it 1-1 early on, the Indians reeled off five-straight scores to take a
commanding lead, however, Wooster responded by closing out the half with a
four-goal run of its own to cut it to 6-5 at halftime.
The teams alternated goals throughout the second stanza, as neither
could take control of the game. With I.U.P. leading 10-8, the Scots knotted
it up with two-straight, one of which came via sophomore Megan Kennedy with
just :35 remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
The Indians scored the first two of overtime to take control before
freshman Rachel Stevens scored to pull within one again, but that would be
all the scoring.
Leading Wooster was sophomore Beth Hemminger, who compiled six
points coming on two goals and four assists. Kennedy contributed three
points, all of which were goals, while seniors Katelyn Connolly and Jessica
Critchlow had two goals and one assist apiece. Stevens ended up with two
scores in the loss, while fellow freshman Lizzie Newton added an assist.
For I.U.P., freshman Lindsay Martin led the way with five points on
three goals and two assists.
In goal, junior Kim Christensen produced a 13-save outing for the
Scots, while junior Pam Roy posted 11 saves in the win.
Wooster will try and get on the winning track Wednesday (March 28),
when it travels to Delaware, Ohio, for a meeting with Ohio Wesleyan
University, a team that it defeated 11-9 last season.
