The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final 24 seconds to defeat Ohio Wesleyan University 11-10 on Wednesday (March 28) to notch its first win in four tries this season, and more importantly, get off to a 1-0 start in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

Leading 10-9 with about a minute to play, Ohio Wesleyan appeared to have the game in hand when goalie Tamar Jeffery collected a groundball. However, when attempting to clear, the Battling Bishops were called for an offside penalty and Wooster was given another opportunity.

After two shots went wide, Scot freshman Rachel Stevens juggled the ball on a free position play, but retained possession and snuck one past Jeffery to even the score with 24 ticks remaining in regulation.

Miriam Esber, a junior for Wooster, gained control of the ball on the ensuing draw and passed it to senior Katelyn Connolly, who fed the ball to sophomore Megan Kennedy for the goal, giving the Scots their first lead of the game with just 14 seconds remaining on the clock.

The game was close throughout, as Ohio Wesleyan never led by more than two goals and there were five ties.

For Wooster, Connolly had a career day with six points on a goal and five assists, while Kennedy and Stevens tossed in three goals apiece. Other scorers included junior Emily White with two goals, Esber and sophomore Beth Hemminger with one goal apiece, and freshman Nicole Pritchard with an assist.

The Battling Bishops, who fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference, were led by sophomore Amanda McDermott's five goals.

Defensively, sophomore Kim Christensen made five saves to preserve the victory, while Jeffery finished the day with 17 saves.

The Scots look to continue their winning ways this Saturday (March 31), when they are scheduled to host Medaille College at 1 p.m.
